Parents Make the Difference: Support, Sportsmanship, Commitment.

Parent Expectations

The HBA wants travel basketball to be a positive, rewarding experience for players, coaches and families. To make that happen, we expect all parents and fans to follow these expectations:

Sideline Behavior

  • Encourage players with positive support only.
  • Do not make critical comments to or about opposing players — Cheer FOR your team, not AGAINST the other team.
  • Sideline coaching and negative comments toward players (from either team), coaches, officials or other fans are not allowed.
  • Misbehavior may result in warnings, suspension or dismissal from the program.
  • Never confront a referee after a game. Per league rules, anyone (coach, player, parent, fan) who approaches a referee after a game — even to ask for an explanation about a rule — is subject to an automatic suspension. If you have a concern about a referee, talk to your child's coach or reach out to an HBA board member so it can be addressed through the proper channels.

Missed Practices & Games

  • Players may miss up to 2 games and/or 3 practices (not counting illness, injury or conflicts pre-approved by coaches).
  • Additional absences could lead to reduced playing time; chronic absence could result in dismissal.
  • Parents must notify coaches in advance of all absences. Failure to notify could result in reduced playing time.

Communication with Coaches

  • Parents (and players) should always show respect to our volunteer coaches.
  • Questions or concerns should be addressed calmly — and not immediately after games.
  • Parents can reach out to a member of the HBA board for assistance.
  • Parents also have the opportunity to share feedback in an end-of-season survey.

Concussion Awareness

Parents should review our Concussion Awareness page for information on spotting and treating concussions.

Game Assistance

  • Parents may be asked to operate the scoreclock or keep the scorebook at games (volunteer basis). As per league rules, those who do cannot cheer or coach from the scorer's table.

Social Media

  • Players and parents should never post negative or inflammatory statements about coaches, officials, fans or players from any team in any program.
  • Violations may result in suspension or removal from the program without refund.
